Real objects are not perfect solids

The formulas assume ideal shapes, but a real tank has walls, curves and fittings that change the true capacity. Treat a volume as a close estimate, and allow a margin when it matters, an overflowing tank is an expensive surprise.

Mind the units

Enter every dimension in the same unit, and remember the volume comes out cubed. To reach litres or gallons, convert from cubic centimetres or cubic inches, and take care not to mix the systems.
